Scripps Research announced today that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has granted it $54 million for continued work on the national All of US Research Program. The money will support Scripps Translation Institute’s efforts to build the research program’s health research data as part of a nationwide research consortium. The current project is expected to last an additional five years with potential total funding of $282 million.

“We are delighted to be part of this historic research effort and immensely grateful to the NIH for our continued collaboration,” said Eric Topol, MD, founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute and principal investigator of the award. “The All of Us Research Program is a monumental undertaking with far-reaching impact and potential to advance individualized medicine.”

Topol and the team at Scripps will oversee a far-reaching consortium of blood centers, community health centers, health insurers, and health technology companies, among others to manage The Participant Center, which provides participants access to parts of the program. It also helps foster engagement in All of Us and enhances the program’s data collection capabilities.

As part of the NIH award, Scripps will also manage pilot program called All of Us Participant Labs, which will research and implement novel technologies aimed at increasing enrollment, engagement and retention of All of Us participant. In addition to crating methods and technologies to improve participant engagement, Scripps researchers will also evaluate ways to improve sample collection and identify opportunities to collect new data types for use within the program.

“We are excited to continue supporting the program’s goal of democratizing researcher access to a vast and inclusive data resource. We hope it empowers a wide variety of medical breakthroughs that ultimately result in better disease prevention and treatments for all of us,” said Julia Moore Vogel, PhD, co-principal investigator and program director of The Participant Center for the All of Us Research Program.

The Participant Center partner organizations include Active Minds, Behavioral Insights Team, BioLinked, Blood Assurance Tennessee Blood Center, Bloodworks Northwest Blood Center, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, CareEvolution, Cascade Regional Blood Center, CVS, Denver Health, ExamOne, Fitbit, LifeSouth, Mary’s Center, Montage Marketing Group, Nextdoor, Owaves, Pyxis Partners, Quest Diagnostics, San Diego Blood Bank, South Texas Blood & Tissue Blood Center, Suncoast, and WebMD.

Scripps research has worked within the NIH on the All of Us since 2016, when it was tapped to help promote enrollment in the program via digital outreach that include mobile technloogy and web apps.
